Sei Network is nearing its long-awaited Giga upgrade, with developers saying final technical work has begun. While many users are focused on its release date, the team says the most important advances are happening behind the scenes with SIP-3, a major upgrade that will change how networks work.
SIP-3: Paving the way for Say Giga
Co-founder Jayendra Jog said in the latest update that SIP-3 aims to simplify Sei’s core mechanics. Instead of supporting both EVM and Cosmos transactions, the network will move to an EVM-only setup.
This means that sei removes a lot of old and complex code linked to Cosmos and CosmWasm. By offloading this extra burden, you can help your network run more efficiently and scale performance even further.
Notably, the SEI community approved this upgrade last May, and it is currently being phased in.
What EVM-Only really means to Sei
Once SIP-3 is fully deployed, only EVM addresses will be able to send transactions on Sei, and Cosmos-based transactions will be phased out.
This may seem like a small change, but it’s a big one. By focusing solely on EVM, SEI can better optimize performance, tools, and infrastructure. The team says this streamlined approach made gig upgrades possible.
Sei aims to become a fully EVM-only chain by mid-2026, with most of SIP-3 completed by the end of Q1 2026.

Network release and timeline
SIP-3 will be rolled out through several protocol updates.
- v6.3 (Testnet – January-March): Adds full staking via EVM and allows indexers and custodians to track staking using the EVM API.
- v6.4 (Testnet – January-March): Sei can now block inbound IBC transfers and prevent Cosmos-based assets from being bridged in.
In a future update, outbound IBC transfers will also be shut down and sei’s native oracles will be replaced with established providers such as Chainlink, API3, and Pyth. These changes will be live on mainnet only after governance approval, which is expected towards the end of Q1 2026.
Important actions for Sei users
The SIP-3 upgrade includes important warnings for some users.
- USDC.n holder should be switched to native USDCOr you risk losing access if IBC forwarding is turned off.
- Other IBC assets such as ATOM will need to be moved out of Sei before the mainnet changes.
- DeFi users relying on IBC tokens are advised to close their positions early.
Sei Labs suggests using third-party tools like Skip:Go to manage migrations, but cautions users to do their own research.
Seigiga and 200,000TPS goal
With SIP-3 acting as a “lightening” phase, SEI Giga is the next step in pushing throughput into the 200,000 transactions/second range.
Community leaders describe SIP-3 as a performance reset rather than a regular upgrade. Sei believes that by eliminating complexity and focusing on a single design, it can scale more efficiently than other high-TPS chains that still rely on layered architectures.
Designing for a post-quantum future
Some in the Sei community are already focused not only on speed, but also on long-term security as the network grows. One topic that is gaining traction is post-quantum cryptography. This uses much larger signatures and higher verification costs, which can tax high-throughput blockchains.
The Sei contributors say the network’s design lends itself well to approaches such as proof batching, recursive verification, and incentive-based security. Sei treats quantum resistance not as a simple key exchange, but as a broader systems challenge that must work in parallel with extreme performance.
Although no blockchain is fully quantum-proof yet, proponents believe Say’s performance-first approach could be an advantage in the long run.
In total
SIP-3 is a big change for Sei Network. By moving to an EVM-only model, simplifying protocols, and preparing for Gig, Say is betting on performance, scalability, and long-term flexibility.
With Giga’s major announcements teased as “coming soon,” the focus is on how well these upgrades will perform and whether Sei will be able to achieve its goal of redefining high-performance layer 1 blockchains.
