The blockchain parser has discovered agitation of the relic. Bitcoin wallet, which had been silent since 2012, woke up and moved its huge stash of 232.16 BTC for the first time in over a decade.
From dust to treasures
And it wasn’t alone. For the past few days, btcparser.com has determined that it is time for several other long sleeping wallets to stretch their legs, indicating that after years of sleep, ancient coins will be returned to circulation. On September 11th, two (1, 2) small dust transactions – one for 0.00000550 BTC and the other for 0.00000600 BTC, each emerged from a separate legacy wallet that has not been touched since 2012.
Both wallets pack a huge punch into Bitcoin Holding. One controlled 300 BTC over $34 million, while the other shifted 200 bTC to two fresh Pay-to-Script (P2SH) wallets. For now, the 300 BTC stash remains untouched and has been resting for years. After these two dust-sized movements, the 2013 wallet jumped into the action, sending 100 BTC with block height of 914231.
Curiosity is mirror images. Like the 2012 wallet, which relocated the 200btc, this splits 100 BTC into two P2SH addresses. According to data from BTCParser.com, several legacy wallets from 2017 were stirred at block height of 914246, sending 10 BTC, 12.42 BTC and 51.84 BTC. On Thursday, the activity continued as 25 BTC from the long-standing wallet in 2015, with 14.07 BTC being moved for the first time since its creation in 2014.
A big movement then took place: 232.16 BTC shifted at block height of 914268. This 2012 stash followed the same playbook as the pre-2012 and 2013 transfers, splitting the coin into two Pay-to-Script-Hash (P2SH) wallets.
Despite multiple instances of the same address in the input, the transaction still scored 75 out of 100 privacy scores. Everything turns out to be September 11th is a vibrant day for many years Bitcoin, with the gusts of old wallets returning.
The days that followed were quiet, with no dormant movements, but on September 11, I broke the silence at around 645.49 BTC on the move. In addition to winning streaks, two 2017 legacy wallets, which hold 11.34 BTC and 39.64 BTC, shifted funds for the first time on September 12th.
Dormant wallets are back for a large crowd as Bitcoin stays comfortably above $100,000. While some of these coins are clearly being spent, many whales appear to be moving large sums to new address formats driven by growing concern over the looming threat of quantum computing.
