A day after Microsoft issued a similar statement, Google announced that it would continue to make Anthropic’s artificial intelligence models available to customers through its cloud platform, except for defense-related work.
The announcement by two of the world’s largest cloud infrastructure providers comes after the U.S. Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk.
A Google spokesperson said Friday that the decision does not prevent the company from collaborating with Anthropic on non-defense projects, and that the company’s products will continue to be available through platforms such as Google Cloud.
Anthropic’s Claude model is available on Google Cloud via the Vertex AI platform. Google is also a major financial supporter of the company. In January 2025, the search giant committed to additional investment in Anthropic, adding to its previous $2 billion stake.
Anthropic uses Google Cloud infrastructure to train its models and recently expanded its partnership with the company, giving it access to up to 1 million custom tensor processing units from Google.
The dispute arose after Anthropic did not agree to new terms requested by the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the use of its AI systems.
Following the disagreement, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to halt the use of human technology. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later said the Pentagon would phase out its cooperation with the company over six months.
Some defense technology companies have already told their employees to stop using Anthropic’s Claude model and switch to alternative models from competing providers such as OpenAI.
Microsoft is the first major cloud partner to confirm that it will continue to support Anthropic products despite the Department of Defense designation.
Microsoft announced Thursday that its attorneys have reviewed the designation and concluded that Anthropic products, including Claude, will remain available to customers outside the Department of the Army.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the company intends to challenge the government’s supply chain risk designation in court.
Reports late Friday also confirmed that Amazon will continue to provide Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology to its cloud customers, except for work involving the Department of Defense.
