Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter and creator of decentralized apps like BitChat and White Noise, likes the idea of having a decentralized GitHub.
In X, the developer shared a screenshot of the suspended GitHub account. He said, “My GitHub account has been suspended.” A second developer responded that they needed a distributed version to prevent outages.
Jack Dorsey answered, “Yes.”

Dorsey promotes blockchain-based GitHub
It’s clear that Dorsey is pushing the idea of a decentralized GitHub. But will he build a new decentralized version like what he did with BitChat and White Noise?
Feedback on Jack Dorsey’s “Yes” was mixed.
Someone jokingly pointed to BitChat and said, “Let’s call it BitHub.” Another user asked, “What about Git on the blockchain?” A third person wrote, “Isn’t Git already a distributed version control system without a hub?”
Git is a tool that allows many developers to work on the same project without requiring a single computer or “hub” to control everything. That’s what we mean by Distributed Version Control System (DVCS). It’s already working great.
But the problem isn’t the technology itself, it’s the developers. Most developers still prefer easy, centralized platforms like GitHub and GitLab that are simple and familiar. The infrastructure, including tools and systems, already exists to use Git in a fully decentralized way, but very few people are using it.
We spoke to IT consultant Moe Amaidi to get his take on the current state of coding repositories. He told us: “Git is already a robust distributed version control system that can meet most technical needs and handle almost any codebase size. What makes Github successful is its tooling system, including issue tracking, CI/CD, and ease of use that many teams rely on.”
He added: “In fact, it’s interesting to see Jack Dorsey pushing for a decentralized or decentralized version of GitHub. This could include equalizing or improving their usability for wider adoption, given that without a ‘hub’ the amount of maintenance these systems require would be much more difficult.” ” he explained.
According to recent statistics, GitHub has over 150 million users. However, the number of Git users is not clear. Radcle, a peer-to-peer (p2p) code collaboration platform or “forge” built on top of Git, reported last September that it was bringing 2,000 repositories and a little more than 200 nodes online each week.
GitHub recently suspended a number of accounts. A security researcher named Celeste said GitHub locked her for no apparent reason. She doesn’t have access to back up the repository.
Jack Dorsey is pushing decentralization on all fronts. This year alone, he launched two decentralized messaging apps: BitChat and White Noise. He supports David Clark, an American computer scientist who has been working on the development of the Internet since the mid-1970s, and shares his belief in consensus and code.
If Dorsey builds a blockchain-backed version of Git, developers will have the option to write and collaborate without censorship.
