US President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose tariffs of 10% to 25% on imports from European Union countries.
President Trump said the decision was aimed at increasing pressure on Denmark to buy Greenland and was based on national security reasons.
According to President Trump, the United States has provided effective subsidies to Denmark and EU countries for many years. However, stricter measures are necessary for “world peace and security.” The president asserted that China and Russia have interests in Greenland, saying the region’s strategic importance is growing and that under the current security situation only the United States can play a decisive role there.
According to the decision, from February 1, 2026, a 10% tariff will apply to all products originating from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. This tax rate will increase to 25% on June 1, 2026. President Trump said those tariffs will remain in effect until an agreement is reached on the “complete and complete purchase” of Greenland.
President Trump recalled that an attempt by the United States to purchase Greenland had been on the agenda for more than 150 years, and said that many past presidents had taken steps in this direction, but each time Denmark had rejected the offer. He argued that modern defense systems and hundreds of billions of dollars in security investments, known today as the “Golden Dome,” can be most efficiently operated by geographically including Greenland.
President Trump said the United States is open to immediate negotiations with Denmark and other interested countries, arguing that this step is essential to maintaining global peace and security.
